This unit is a custom painted version of the old MRL scheme.  While MRL does not have any GEVO's, the customers railroad does, so that is how this one came to be.

Even More Fantasy Cars

(Someone really likes those MRL cars... )

The MRL 86' Auto Parts cars are a combination of Atlas and Con-Cor.  The Atlas cars again proved to be a bit of a challenge to strip.   I don't know what Atlas used on their first generation of cars, but the paint stuck and was really thick.  Oh well, on to the next batch...

All of the auto parts boxcars have individual road numbers that have not (and will not) be repeated.

Completed December 15, 2009

This is a set of Kato 40' containers that were stripped and repainted into fantasy MRL.  I used CSX blue from Modelflex for the base coat and decals from Microscale.

Even More Fantasy Cars...

Completed another round of fantasy cars over the last couple of  days.  All of the cars were stripped with 91% alcohol before being repainted into the current colors.

Paint is either from Polly Scale or Modelflex.  Decals are from Highball Graphics and Microscale.

The next batch of MRL boxcars are made by Micro-Trains.

More Fantasy Cars

Completed another round of fantasy cars over the last couple of  weeks.  All of the cars were stripped with 91% alcohol before being repainted into the current colors.

I started with the Atlas 33,000 gallon tankers.  These are the easiest to strip out of all of the cars.  Nothing really challenging with these projects.

Paint is either from Polly Scale and all decals are Microscale.

The next batch of MRL boxcars are made by Micro-Trains and Con-Cor.  These cars are also very easy to strip with 91% alcohol.  The waffle sided cars are a bit of a pain.  A lot of Micro Sol was used and I had to slit some of the decals in order to get them to seat properly.  A touch of white paint covers up the gaps where the decal wouldn't sit all the way down and had to be cut.

Fantasy Cars

Completed another round of fantasy cars over the last two weeks.  All of the cars were stripped with 91% alcohol before being repainted into the current colors.

I started with the Atlas 33,000 gallon tankers.  These are the easiest to strip out of all of the cars.  They bathed for about an hour in the alcohol bath and the paint melted right off.  The Glacier Green and Big Sky blue compliment the two previous tankers shown earlier.

Paint is either from Polly Scale or Modelflex.  All decals are Microscale.

The MRL 86' autoparts cars are a combination of Atlas (first two), Con-Cor (second two), and Bluford Shops.  The Con-Cor and Bluford Shops cars are easy to strip in the 91% alcohol solution.  They took about 1.5 hours to completely strip down.  The Atlas cars were a different story and provided a bit of a challenge.  I finally was able to get the old paint off with Chameleon Stripper (after it finally arrived) and let the cars soak for about 6 hours.  I don't know what Atlas used on their first generation of cars, but the paint stuck and was really think.  I believe it was designed to hide any blemishes on the cars because there were a few areas that didn't show up until the paint was removed.
