Union Pacific

EMD E9A and E9B

This was a simple number change of factory painted shells.  Each of the old numbers were stripped with alcohol and then new ones were applied with Microscale decals.  I went slow enough that touch up paint was not necessary.  Total time was about 6 hours from start to finish.

UP Tank Cars #5, 6, 7, and 8

These cars are modified Athearn Modern Tank Cars that are representing the UP tenders.  The only thing missing is the T in the reporting marks.  Union Pacific uses UPT for its fuel tenders and Microscale only produces these in HO Scale so far.  The Fuel management decal was done on an ink jet printer using decal paper.    While not exact, these cars get as close as you can with readily available cars.

Images of the real tanker can be seen at: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=163959

Union Pacific SD40-2 #3051

This was a stock Chicago and North Western SD40 that has been stripped and patched to Union Pacific SD40 3051.  This is the second 3051 unit I've done and apparently confused the fact that the original 3051 was an SD40 versus an SD40-2.

  • BLMA Trains 15" Grab Irons (BLM-59)
  • BLMA Cut Levers (BLM-11)
  • BLMA Trainline Air Hoses (BLM-69)

Union Pacific C44-9W #9586

This is engine started out as a standard Southern Pacific paint scheme from Kato (#8100).  I stripped the factory road numbers and faded the lettering with 91% alcohol.  Microscale decals were used for the road numbers, patch, and shields on the front and back.  I used a wash of engine black to highlight the grills and give some grime to the fuel tanks and trucks.

Details Include:

  • BLMA Mu Hoses (BLM-13)
  • BLMA 15" Grab Irons (BLM-59)
  • BLMA 18" Grab Irons (BLM-60)

Union Pacific 33K Tanker

I started with the Atlas 33,000 gallon tankers.  These are the easiest to strip out of all of the cars.  Nothing really challenging with these projects.

Union Pacific C44-9W #9819

This is engine started out as a standard UP paint scheme from Kato (#9207).  I stripped the factory lettering with 91% alcohol and used decals for the road numbers, Union Pacific, and added the nose wings.  I also added the UP Future Safety slogan that they used in 2002 on this engine.  Kato did not use black to outline the Union Pacific and it looks funny when you renumber an engine with Microscale decals because they use the black outline.  I will be doing this with all of my UP engines from Kato.  The really tiny print under 9819 is the website for UP (www.uprr.com)

Details Include:

  • BLMA Mu Hoses (BLM-13)
  • BLMA 15" Grab Irons (BLM-59)
