Conrail GP38-2 #8146

This engine is a stock Atlas GP38-2 that has been weathered to resemble some of the rust buckets Conrail had right before the split with CSX and NS.  I used prototype photos to balance the weathering.  For whatever reason, the roof and horizontal surfaces rusted like crazy but the sides remained in great shape.  I used a combination of Polyscale rust, weathered black and alcohol washes to get the desired effect.  I layered each color as I went.  The white streaks on the engines are also on the prototype, but I have no idea what caused it.  The signal box is from Hays Bros.

Conrail GP38-2 #8182

This engine is a stock Atlas GP38-2 that has been weathered to resemble some of the rust buckets Conrail had right before the split with CSX and NS.  I used prototype photos to balance the weathering.  I went a little easier on the rust for this one to resemble a more recent paint job.  The signal box is from Hays Bros.

Completed another round of weathering, this time on some bi-level auto racks.  The effect was done with a series of washes, acrylic paint, and chalks.  Each layer built was on each other until the final look was achieved.  I didn't go off any specific car, just what I thought looked good when compared to photos of the real thing. I also changed out the wheels to Fox Valley 33" metal wheels.  No graffiti on these.....yet!!

All three cars are made by Red Caboose.

Completed December 17, 2011

I weathered my first set of cars today.  I'm pleased with the results for the first effort.  The weathering was done with a series of washes, acrylic paint, and chalks.  Each layer was built on each other until the final look was achieved.  I didn't go off any specific car, just what I thought looked good.

The BN car was distressed before hand to give a faded look to the emblems.  The graffiti is from Microscale.

Both cars are made by Intermountain.
